About — TIPS AND TOEZ LIMITED

An engineering practice
built on restraint, rigour
and quiet expertise.

TIPS AND TOEZ LIMITED was founded by senior engineers who wanted to work the way they always thought consulting should work: small teams, clear writing, durable decisions and direct ownership of what gets shipped.

§ Introduction

A studio of engineers, not consultants.

The practice is intentionally small. Our work spans the full software lifecycle — architecture, build, security, observability and long-term operation — for organisations that take their technology seriously. We are independent, employee- run, and have no resale or referral relationships that bias our advice.

§ Mission & Values

Mission and values.

Our mission is to make production engineering predictable for the organisations we serve. Predictability is not a slogan — it is what allows product teams to plan, what allows finance to forecast, and what allows operators to sleep. Four values shape the way we work.

Craft
We measure ourselves by what we ship into production and by how it behaves at 3 a.m.
Honesty
Estimates, risks and trade-offs are stated in writing — before, during and after the work.
Restraint
We choose boring, durable technology over novelty whenever the problem allows it.
Continuity
We invest in clear code and documentation so that teams who inherit our work are not stranded.

§ Expertise

Professional expertise.

Every engineer at the practice has at least seven years of production experience. Several have led platform organisations at well-known technology companies; others have specialised in security, data engineering or developer tooling for the whole of their career.

  • Architecture

Distributed systems, event-driven design, service decomposition, resilience patterns.

  • Delivery

Trunk-based development, progressive delivery, automated quality gates.

  • Security

AppSec, cloud security, identity, secrets, incident response.

  • Data

Real-time pipelines, warehousing, governance, analytics, evaluation-driven ML.

  • Operations

Observability, on-call, capacity planning, FinOps, post-incident review.

  • Discovery

Stakeholder interviews, system mapping, technical due diligence.

§ Approach

Our approach to technology.

We approach technology the way a structural engineer approaches a building. The interesting choices happen early and at the foundations; the visible work is only credible if those foundations were honest.

  1. 01

    Choose proven before novel

Novelty is reserved for places where it provably reduces risk or cost.

  2. 02

    Make decisions explicit

Every significant choice is recorded in an architecture decision record.

  3. 03

    Optimise for change

Systems are designed to be understood, observed and replaced by their successors.

  4. 04

    Own the consequences

We carry the pager. The practice is on call for what it ships.

§ Quality

Quality standards.

The practice maintains documented standards across security, accessibility, data protection and operational excellence. Each engagement is delivered against them and reviewed at every milestone.

  • ISO 27001-aligned

Information security management modelled on the international standard.

  • SOC 2 readiness

Operational controls documented and continuously evidenced for audit.

  • GDPR & CCPA

Lawful data processing, minimisation and resident rights built into delivery.

  • Accessibility

WCAG 2.2 AA targeted from design through release for every public surface.
